Well, the time has arrived!! Everyone has been asking us to brew a lager and Alex has not only done so, but done an excellent job! It is a great crisp, clean beer for the hot days of summer. But don’t take my word for it. Try it yourself! Stop in for a taste - we are open 7 days a week!
Lager vs Ale
April 30th, 2010Fan mail April 20th, 2010
April 21st, 2010Hi, Donna!
I just felt compelled to write to you today to tell you how wonderful your Sugar Shack brew tastes!
When we were at your place in February, you gave me a small sample although it was not quite ready. I was impressed.
One of my co-workers was in your area last weekend and he bought some Sugar Shack & Wind & Sail for me. I tried the Sugar Shack last night and I was really impressed! That hit a WOW! for me, so I just wanted to share that news with you.
I will, of course, enjoy the W&S at a later date.
Take care,
R
Refreshing AND rehydrating!
April 15th, 2010Just a quick thought or two.
Barley Days Brewery is a proud supporter of the County Marathon. This fall it will be held on October 3, 2010, and as always we will be there serving up some of our natural, no additive no preservative beer to the runners when they finish the race.
Rumour (well, google searches) has it that a beer bottle is a better drink to grab at the end of a work out then a water bottle. Any comments???
Maple in the County Weekend
March 26th, 2010We are looking forward to a busy weekend here at Barley Days Brewery! It is maple in the county weekend and there is a lot going on around ‘the County” ! Check out www.mapleinthecounty.ca to see all of the events. We have released our Sugar Shack Ale earlier this month, but if you haven’t tried it yet this is a great weekend to come on in and have a taste! There is a Maple Soiree at the Waring House this Saturday night where you can also find some Sugar Shack Ale. You can sip on this maple treat while you eat some tasty maple desserts and dance to “the Reasons” in the Waring Hall.
Cheers and hope to see you out!

Beer Weather
March 11th, 2010Well, if there is such a thing as beer weather, I would have to say that it is almost upon us!
I found a great quote in a beer Calendar for the month of March. It is an Egyptian Proverb that reads “Do not cease to drink beer, to eat, to intoxicate thyself, to make love, and celebrate the good days.”
Sounds like they knew what they were talking about!!
Don’t forget that March is maple time in the county! The kick off to Sugar Shack Ale is tomorrow! Drop in to Barley Days Brewery today and mention you saw this on our blog and I’ll sell you some a day early! How sweet it is!
Maple In the County
March 1st, 2010The countdown is on!! Only 2 weeks until our Sugar Shack ale will be available in the retail store. I hear that in the past people have lined up at the door to get it! What a great way to welcome spring!
You can look forward to lots of other ’sweet’ events in the county coming up this month as well. Check out the Maple in the County website at www.mapleinthecounty.ca
Busy Day at the Brewery!
February 23rd, 2010It has been a buzz of excitement here at the brewery today!! The boys were in this morning bottling the Wind & Sail. This is an exciting batch to watch for at your LCBO as they have a new “New Brewer New Taste” sticker on them. These are part of our relaunch now that our amazing new brewer Alex is with us. See if you can find it at your local LCBO as the beer is dark and tasty!
I had a great visit with 5 people from Germany that were traveling from Toronto to Ottawa today. They stopped in to have a few tasters and pick up some coasters to take to their friends back home.
Meanwhile, Alex is cleaning/filling kegs, filtering beer and the phone is ringing, the fax is going and the emails are rolling in and the the lager continues to ferment…
just your typical day at Barley Days Brewery. Stop in and say hi. Have a free taster and take a 6 pack home to the spouse.
Cheers, D.

Drop by the brewery to have a taste. Coming March 2010.
Yuletide Cherry Porter

Check out the tasting notes:
Barley Days Brewery’s Yuletide Cherry Porter has a velvety texture and crimson hue. It’s designed to warm you on winter nights and caress your palate with every sip. The choice of English hops and malts, combined with local cherries, gives this dark porter its lush flavour. Yuletide Cherry Porter is an unfiltered seasonal specialty brew with 5.5% alcohol. Stock up right away; it’s only available for a short time.
Greetings beer lovers!
May 5th, 2009Demystifying bock! by Sean Kerry
Barley Days Brewery’s May Bock is a clean, malty, German lager designed and crafted on site by Brewmaster Jan Rorig.
History: The name “Bock” refers to the city of Einbeck, in Saxony. During the heyday of the Hanseatic League (the late 1300s), Einbeck was a brewing centre whose beer was famous throughout Europe. The modern style of bock was created in Munich in the 17th century based on Einbeck models.
Maibock/HellesBock: A relatively pale, strong, malty lager beer. Hop character is generally more apparent than in other bocks. Moderate to strong malt aroma, often with a lightly toasted quality. Deep gold to light amber in colour. Large, creamy, persistent, white head. Medium bodied. Moderate to moderately high carbonation. Smooth and clean with no harshness or astringency. A fairly recent development in comparison to the other members of the bock family. The serving of Maibock is specifically associated with springtime festivals and the month of May.
Traditional Bock: A dark strong, malty lager beer. Strong malt aroma, often with moderate amounts of toasty overtones. Virtually no hop aroma. Light copper to brown colour, often with garnet highlights. Large, creamy, persistent, off-white head. Complex maltiness, some caramel notes, hop bitterness is generally only high enough to support the malt flavours. Medium to medium-full bodied. Moderate to moderately low carbonation.
Doppelbock: A very strong and rich lager. A bigger version of either a traditional bock or a hellesbock. Very strong maltiness. Darker versions will have a strong malt presence with tosty notes. A moerdately low fruity aspect to the aroma often described as prune, plu, or grape may be present (but is optional) in dark versions. A very slight chocolate-like aroma may be preent in darket versions, but no roasted or burned aromatics should ever be present. Deep gold to dark brown in colour. Darker versions often have ruby highlights. Rich and malty with medium-full to full body. Moderate to moderately low carbonation.
